San Luis is a small town situated near the corner of California and Arizona. Considered a suburb of Yuma, San Luis is the largest town in the remote area, home to several Native American Reservations and a military base. If you happen to bite into a watermelon during the winter months, there is a good chance it came from the nearby desert, where a large amount of product is grown and shipped across the nation to states with more seasonal weather. If you happen to find yourself in San Luis, there is plenty to see and do, here are just a few of the top things you should check out.

U-Sell-It Swap Meet

At the weekly swap, you can find just about everything from a glimpse of local culture to random household items to clothing to things that you can’t quite identify but are cool enough that you know you want at least one. Parking and admission are always free, so you have nothing to lose and possibly a suntan to gain by checking out the swap market Thursday to Sunday mornings on East Urtuzuastegui Street.

Joe Orduno Park

If you want a place to relax for a few hours, let the kids stretch their legs or try out some local food items you grabbed from the swap or local market, then head over to Joe Orduno Park. While it may be hard to believe, there is grass in the desert and a great deal of it at this great park in downtown San Luis. You will also find an aquatic center, playground, BBQ pits, and a baseball field.

Cocopah Museum

It would be a shame to visit San Luis without learning about its rich heritage. The Cocopah Native Americans have lived in the area for generations and in 1996 built the Cocopah Museum to help celebrate and preserve their culture. It is an excellent place for the entire family and is located in the Sonoran desert, just a short drive from the city.
