In the past, the event was officially sponsored by San Diego Harley and assisted by the Tijuana and San Diego police who help keep the roadways open for the event to proceed. While the 2020 Toy Run was listed on the official Solo Angeles website, a Facebook post from December of 2020 announced that the event had to be canceled this year due to COVID.
Within the Facebook post, the motorcycle club stated it was devastated to have to cancel the event for the first time in 35 years, but that they decided there was no safe way to hold the event and still maintain limited social contact. They added that while they are very disappointed, they hope that in the future everyone will stay safe so that next year the group can come back together with more strength and bring laughs and “a smile to the children of Tijuana.”
Traditionally the event began in the morning in San Diego at Chicano Park and then proceeded down to Revolution Avenue where the children were lined up and music, food, and drinks were arranged. Historically, Solos Angeles has prided itself on being an altruistic motorcycle club choosing their name which translates to “Only Angels” to distance themselves from the negative connotations associated with the “Hell’s Angels.”
The purpose of the motorcycle club was to find a place for members to socialize, but the group evolved to become a service organization known for its charity events which eventually gave birth to The Tijuana Toy Run. While it was not initially started with the intention of serving the community, today it is the one thing that club members pride themselves on the most and it is safe to bet the toy run will be back.
