People around Austin are proud to call themselves weird, as the eclectic, artsy city stands on its own against the decidedly southern flavor of nearby cities. While it may be the capital city of Texas, Austin is its own microcosm of music, art, and hipster flavor. The nightlife of Austin is unparalleled in the southwest and the local arts scene attracts everyone from celebrities to local artisans. There is always something to do in Austin, so staying busy during a vacation to the live music capital of the world isn’t hard. Here are just a few places that should be on your must-see list.

Barton Springs Pool

Austin offers a variety of hot spring pools to community embers of all ages that have to be experienced to be believed. The community pools are a true hidden treasure of the city, and one of the most representative watering holes is the Barton Springs Pool. The 1,000-foot natural pool is lined with limestone and fed by underground springs and located just a few minutes west of downtown in Zilker Park.

Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail

Situated in the middle of downtown Austin, the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail offers a fantastic way for visitors to experience the amazing skyline of the city from a green oasis tucked inside of it. The trail itself is marked with dozens of historical plaques that offer tourists a glimpse of the city’s rich history while encouraging them to stretch their legs and appreciate the natural beauty of Austin.

See the Bats at Congress Avenue Bridge

At one point Austin’s nickname was bat city as it is home to the largest urban bat colony in North America. Every night around sunset millions of bats fly out from underneath the Congress Avenue Bridge, a sight that has to truly be seen to fully grasp. There are plenty of bars and nightclubs located nearby, so after watching the bats take flight you can easily pick a spot to experience the live music the city is known for.

Stop by the Austin White Horse

If you truly want to experience the “weird” and passionate character of Austin that everyone raves about, make sure to pop by one of its most diverse honkey-tonks: the White Horse. From the outside it is overwhelming, but inside regulars enjoy the dance floor, live music, pool tables, and a yard designed to let people catch their breath between sets.
