History of Ensenada

Though founded in the sixteenth century, this Baja city remained a small settlement for centuries just as the state remained relatively isolated from Spanish colonization.  The mountains, sea, and difficult terrain were not terrifically appealing to the early Spanish.  The Yuman indigenous tribes made their home around Ensenada and still do today.  After the missionaries moved into the territory accompanied by settlers, the city began to grow at a modest pace, but remained rather small until the twentieth century.  It served as a temporary capital for the state; however, it blossomed once it became one of the state’s most beloved tourist destinations.
