Things to Do in La Mesa California

Just 20 minutes from downtown San Diego, La Mesa offers plenty of things to do. Much of the city is pedestrian-friendly and strolling from shop to shop. You can ride your bike through Lake Murray then cross over the highway for lunch in Old La Mesa. No doubt, you’ll find your own favorite attractions in this city, but here are the most memorable ones that I have gone back to time and again.

Lake Murray Mission Trails

Located within Mission Trails Regional Park, Lake Murray is a breathtaking lake where you can fish or bring your boat for a great day on the water. There are places that rent out kayaks and smaller boats as well. Locals know the best picnic spots to catch the sunset or enjoy the tranquil setting. I have ridden my bike on trails along the lake and found that offered the best view and let me set my own pace for the day.

Fusion Glass Co.

I wear a lot of handcrafted jewelry because I like to have unique pieces. At this jewelry store, there are ready-made glass necklaces, earrings and jewelry. You can also get in on the action. Crafty customers can take classes in stained glass, jewelry design, stained glass and other signature crafts.

Mount Helix Park

Mount Helix Park offers great views of the San Diego skyline. I recommend studying view-maps in one of the bench areas. The Yawkey Trail runs for a quarter-mile around the park, giving you a chance to stretch your legs without getting too tired. Mary Yawkey, for whom the park is named, found the serene views inspiring. If you have a good memory, you should be able to pick out the mountains and hills nearby from the labels on the view-maps.

You can quench your thirst at the nearby Helix Brewing Company which hosts food trucks and has live music on the weekends. Try one of the original brews that are made on-site.

Lamplighters Community Theatre

The Lamplighters Community Theatre in La Mesa, California provides space for community productions. Dating back to 1937, it’s a worthwhile side trip for visitors. The Orange or Green line of the San Diego trolley lets off at Amaya Station, near the theater, which offers six unique productions every year, including Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday matinees. This was a pleasant surprise on my first trip to La Mesa and I am glad I took my friend’s advice and went.

Every time I return from Mexico to La Mesa, I find new things to add to my favorites lists. From wine tastings to trying the latest restaurants, La Mesa makes a great weekend getaway.
