Rocky Point Lodging

The beautiful beach city of Puerto Penasco, known by many as Rocky Point, is one of Mexico’s premier tourist destinations. It boasts an impressive array of sandy beaches (including one famous for its “Spring Break” parties), numerous shopping and eating areas, plenty of opportunities for boating and fishing, and adventurous outdoor activities including “off-roading” at the nearby sand dunes. It basically has a little something for everyone.

When visiting Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco), you will need somewhere to actually stay – meaning, you will need to find good lodging.  Rocky Point Mexico Hotel options offer more than many realize –  it’s not so straightforward – especially for first-time visitors to the area. The lodging options in and around Rocky Point are so numerous that it can be hard to figure out where to stay all on your own. Below are the three main Rocky Point Mexico hotel options explained and dissected so that you can find the place that best suits your needs and preferences.

The three main lodging options when it comes to Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) include camping, motels/hotels, and resorts. Because Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) is such a high-profile tourist destination in Mexico, many of the resorts are of the highest quality and are very pricey. While this is great news if you have some cash to burn, it can be a bummer if you’re looking to travel to the city on a budget. Luckily, the prices at many of Puerto Penasco’s campgrounds and motels should fit into even the strictest of budgets.

Camping in Rocky Point (Puerto Penasco) is relatively safe as far as camping in Mexico goes. Unlike many other Mexican cities, Puerto Penasco has not seen any increase in violent crime as of late. Other than crime, another worry to take into consideration is the heat. Puerto Penasco is a hot place (which is part of the reason that it is so popular with tourists) and if you’re not used to “hot-weather” tent camping, you might want to look into another type of lodging. However, if you’re willing to “rough it” in the tent, then you have plenty of options to choose from.

The most important thing to remember about tent camping in Puerto Penasco is that it is illegal unless you are in an authorized campground area. This means that you can’t just throw up a tent in any old spot on the beach. Luckily though, there are plenty of RV Parks that have space set aside for tent campers. Almost every one of the RV Parks allows tent camping – all that you have to do is stop in and ask – but a few of the most popular ones to stay at are the Reef RV Park, Playa Bonita RV Park, and Whale Hill RV Park.

If you really just can’t stand camping in an RV Park, then head a few miles north or south of town (just make sure that you’re outside of city limits) where beach camping is legal. It’s a bit of a drive but it is worth it if you want to wake up to the ocean nearly lapping at your tent flap!

RV camping is also popular in the Puerto Penasco area. In addition to the three RV Parks mentioned above, you can find cheap RV parking at Playa de Oro RV Park, San Rafael RV Park, Desert Oasis RV Park, and Quality Star RV Park. Keep it in mind that this is in no way a comprehensive list – there are dozens of other RV Parks scattered around the Rocky Point area. There are so many that reservations are usually not needed. If one of the parks is full, simply drive a few minutes down the road to the next and you’re sure to find a spot for the night before long.

If camping isn’t your thing, then there are a variety of motels and hotels to choose from for lodging in Puerto Penasco. The options for motel and hotel lodging range from the barebones and cheap (think $75 per night) to borderline resort-style (think $300 plus per night).

The Hotel Baja in Puerto Penasco is one of the best budget hotels in the area. It is located conveniently next to the airport and is just a short jaunt from the sea. It’s not fancy by any means but it is clean, comfy, and the staff is very helpful. They have air-conditioned rooms, a swimming pool (with a swim-up bar), and can give you discounts on tours in the area – really, what more can you ask from a budget hotel?

The Hotel Paraiso del Desierto is another great budget hotel in Puerto Penasco. It is slightly larger than the Hotel Baja and is also conveniently located. It’s a little farther from the beach but they offer complimentary shuttle service (if you don’t feel like walking for a few minutes) there and back.

Though the Hotel Baja and the Hotel Paraiso del Desierto are both great budget hotels, there are any number of other similarly priced lodgings available in Puerto Penasco. A few others to check out while making your lodging reservations include Hacienda del Mar (it’s a bed and breakfast), Penasco del Sol, and Laos Mar Hotel and Suites.

Many people don’t call a trip to Mexico a “real trip to Mexico” unless resort-style lodging is part of the experience. If you have a little more money to spend on lodging, then Puerto Penasco has several top-quality resorts for you to choose from.

Perhaps the most well-known resort in Puerto Penasco is Las Palomas Golf and Seaside Resort. It is a great starting point for your Rocky Point lodging research. The rooms at Las Palomas Resort are terrific. In fact, they can’t really be called rooms at all. They are basically miniature condos ranging in size from one-bedrooms to five bedrooms – you’ll definitely be living in luxury if you stay at Las Palomas. In addition to its “condo” rooms, the resort has a large pool, swim-up bar, and lazy river in addition to beach access. They also have a world-class 18 hole golf course close at hand.

The Playa Bonita Resort and the Sonoran Spa Resort are two other luxury resorts that are worth checking out. They are both conveniently located, provide that “Puerto Penasco” feel, and offer all of the services and amenities that you expect from a resort-style hotel. Simply put, if you want to stay in a resort in Puerto Penasco, you really don’t have to look too hard.

Puerto Penasco/Rocky Point is one of the most easily accessible beach cities in all of Mexico. It is a quick jaunt from the Arizona border and an even quicker jaunt from the Puerto Penasco airport. If you’re planning a Mexico vacation, then the above tips and suggestions should help you figure out one of the most important pieces of the puzzle – where to stay.
