Otay Mesa ‘Ready Lane’ Opens May 2, 2011

Otay Mesa to open the Ready Lane at the Otay Mesa border crossing on May 2, 2011. This lane is for those with one of these RFID’s: the U.S. Passport Card; the Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL); the Enhanced Tribal Card (ETC); Trusted Traveler Cards (NEXUS, SENTRI and FAST cards); the new Enhanced Permanent Resident Card (PRC) or new Border Crossing Card (BCC).

SENTRI cards are WHTI-compliant documents for entry into the United States by land or sea, and also provide expedited travel to approved members between the U.S. and Mexico border. The system is currently being used at the Otay Mesa, San Ysidro, and Calexico border crossings in California and the El Paso crossing in Texas.

The Sentri lane requires a SENTRI Card – information (fees, how to apply): http://usa.immigrationvisaforms.com/travel/sentri-pass

A friend of mine who goes to Tijuana several times a month to visit her elderly mother said the Sentri lines are often almost as long as the regular lines, but they go a bit faster. Even for her, who has family there and once lived in Mexico, the line formations are a bit confusing and there is a lot of last-minute line changing and “cutting in line” but the Sentri Card is still worth it, she believes (cross the border with a minimum of customs and immigration questioning)

Term definitions:

  1. SENTRI = Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection – any can apply, not all will qualify for this card
  2. * RFID = Radio Frequency I.D. (identification)
  3. WHTI = Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative
  4. Ready Lane = for those with RFID enabled documentation such as a passport (above)
  • SENTRI is for the southern border (U.S./Mexico)
  • NEXUS is for the northern border (U.S./ Canada)
  • FAST is for commercial truck drivers

One website to apply for all: GOES (Global Online Enrollment System)

Sideline info: Electronic Vehicle Registration

With security of cars being a major concern in many countries, RFID technology is being leveraged by government for Vehicle Registration. This helps detect stolen cars and in their retrieval. In Mexico – Neology is working on various such initiatives.
