Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration that depicts Mary and Joseph and their journey to Bethlehem from Jerusalem. The celebration comes originally from Spain and spread to Mexico and parts of the Southwestern United States. Las Posadas is essentially another excuse to party in Mexico from December 16th through the 24th.
This event represents Joseph and Mary seeking lodging for the night, much like Mary and Joseph did 2,020 years ago as they sought somewhere for Mary to give birth to her child. The participating parish selects a home each day where the posada will come, and sing and celebrate. These participating homes are called “Posadas Host”. This host agrees to receive and welcome the procession.
Today’s Posadas celebration has piñatas for the children, delicious food and plenty of friends and family.
The procession usually begins with a Novena, prayer, followed by children dressed as Mary and Joseph, and an angel dressed in white. The
December is a very busy month for tourism in Mexico. It’s warm, and the traditions and authentic culture are welcoming.
