Fallbrook got its name when a Canadian immigrant known as Vital Reche went to this growing area with the rest of his relatives. He was from Fallbrook, Pennsylvania, and decided to name his new home after his old one in 1858. Vital Reche would actually go on to have a profound effect on Fallbrook as a whole.

Vital Reche donated some land in order to create the Fall Brook School, which was the first educational facility in the area. The school lacked a bell tower, so teachers used handheld bells instead. However, it was easier for families to settle in a community that had a school. A school district formed in 1875, and Vital Reche set up a local post office in 1880. There was a real estate boom a mere three years later.

Towards the twentieth century, Fallbrook’s olives became more important than some of its other crops. It got its own telephone service in 1905, establishing new communication networks between Fallbrook and the rest of the nation. Fallbrook started to become famous for its avocados during the 1940’s. The area expanded further after that, with new libraries and stores.

While Fallbrook has still not been officially incorporated yet, that could change in the near future. Fallbrook, California is a genuinely distinct area.
