While more and more people are choosing to get to Puerto Penasco by air, driving there by car is also popular. Unlike many other Mexican highways running south from the border, the road from Lukeville (the town on the US side of the crossing) is very safe. As long as you drive only during the day, you will be absolutely fine. From the border the drive only takes a little over an hour. It is also essential to remember that you need Mexico insurance to drive an automobile in the country – your United States insurance won’t cover you – so make sure that you get set up with some before leaving on your trip. The two main ways to get to Puerto Penasco are by air or by car. The airport at Puerto Penasco is small – it can only process 2,000 or so visitors per day, but, luckily, that’s usually enough, even at the very peak of the season. The cheapest airplane tickets from the United States can be found connecting from the Los Angeles Airport.
