Auto Insurance for Mexico

Posted on April 16, 2019February 17, 2021 by Charles
Liability Insurance Law 2012 Baja

Not many people know this, but you need auto insurance in Mexico. Mexican law does not recognize US car insurance. So, at the very minimum you need to compliment a US policy (which protects damage or theft of your car) with a liability policy from a Mexican company to cover damage you cause to someone else in Mexico.

This means that you could end up having a lot of problems if you are involved in an automobile accident while in Mexico. The good news is that you can easily purchase a Mexican car insurance policy on the Internet and save quite a significant amount of money by doing so.

Many reputable insurance companies provide Mexican auto insurance online. So, you can buy one without any hassle and be properly covered while you are in Mexico.

Auto Insurance for Mexico:  Requirements

To drive legally in Mexico, you need to carry Mexican car insurance as liability coverage is mandatory in the country.

On January 1st, 2019, Mexico announced that it is mandatory for all vehicles that travel on federal highways to have at least third-party liability insurance coverage.

In the United States, each state has “state minimum limits”. Depending on the state, car owners who do not have insurance will have to pay fines.

Mexico is instituting similar laws. Unlike in the US, where drivers exchange insurance information when there is an accident and then go their separate ways, drivers in Mexico need to face a local judge who will determine the party at fault for the accident.

Roadside Assistance is automatic with every policy sold at MexInsurance.com®

Auto insurance for Mexico is extremely important as the party responsible for an accident is held until they are able to show their ability to pay for the damage they caused. In some cases, they can face jail time.

If a driver is at fault, they will be in good shape if they have the following insurance coverage options:

  • Liability coverage, as required by law in Mexico, will show that they have the ability to pay for damages.
  • Legal assistance, providing legal representation before the Mexican authorities, and bail bond.

Keep in mind that if you have limited or no knowledge of the legal system in Mexico, you can have an incredibly tough time, even if you speak Spanish.

This is why you should make sure to learn everything you can about Mexican laws. Also, about auto insurance in Mexico before you head out on your road trip to the country.
